Short History of the Okinawa International SDA Church

Okinawa International Seventh-day Adventist Church (OIC) started in the late 1960's early 1970's as an outreach to the men and women of the armed forces and was called a service men's center. The service men's center was largely supported by Adventist Chaplaincy Ministries as part of the World Headquarters of the Seventh-day Adventist denomination. The Church congregation is under the umbrella of the Japan Union Conference and the Okinawan Mission. The Campus of OIC was located adjacent to Camp Butler before the military returned much of its land back to the Okinawan people. The church is still in the same place but the perimeter of Camp Butler has changed. Many of the old base housing buildings can still be seen in the neighborhood. In the 1990's the reigns of OIC was completely handed over to the Japan Union Conference of Seventh-day Adventist, doing away with the term service men's center. Today OIC still ministers to the spiritual needs of those serving in the military, but has expanded its ministry to include all nations represented in Okinawa Japan.  OIC is the only english speaking Seventh-day Adventist congregation on the Island and stands as a unique multi-cultural ministry resource for the Okinawan Mission of Seventh-day Adventist.
